About India’s Air Quality

India monitors air quality across 700+ stations in 158 states and union territories, using the National Air Quality Index (NAQI) published by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The NAQI scale runs from 0 (Good) to 500 (Severe), measuring PM2.5, PM10, O&sub3;, NO&sub2;, SO&sub2;, CO, and NH&sub3;.

The Indo-Gangetic Plain — stretching from Delhi through Uttar Pradesh to Bihar — consistently records India’s worst air quality due to geography (Himalayan trapping), crop stubble burning, industrial emissions, and winter temperature inversions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current AQI of India?

India does not have a single national AQI number. Air quality varies widely — from AQI 20 (Good) in coastal Kerala to AQI 400+ (Severe) in parts of Delhi-NCR during winter.

How many cities does India monitor for air quality?

India monitors air quality across 700+ CPCB stations in 29 states. AQI Today tracks 486 cities using the Google Air Quality API, covering major metros, tier-2 cities, and emerging towns.

What does the NAQI scale measure?

The National Air Quality Index measures PM2.5, PM10, O₃, NO₂, SO₂, CO, and NH₃. It runs from 0 (Good) to 500 (Severe). PM2.5 and PM10 are the primary drivers in most Indian cities.

How does weather affect air quality in India?

Monsoon rains (June–September) wash out particulates, giving India its cleanest air. Winter temperature inversions (November–February) trap pollutants near the ground, especially across the Indo-Gangetic Plain, causing severe pollution episodes.
